During his life, Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) was a figure of controversy and so became reasonably well known in literary circles.Poe shows signs of his influence, especially when working in the gothic mode or with grotesque humor. 

The Role of English in India

English has been considered to be the first global Lingua Franca. It has been an international language of communication, business, science, information technology, entertainment and so on. Earlier everyone was considered to be literate by their degrees and diplomas, but the knowledge of English language makes an individual literate in today's world. Though many countries do have English as their native language, those who have the command over the English Language are considered and respected as highly educated. In the present time, they have to acquire knowledge of advanced technologies and all kinds of branches of Science.

There is an urgent requirement of such a common language which can be understood by youth all over India and the language in which all data and information is available. The most recent and the most sophisticated discoveries and inventions in science and technology are being made in the universities located in the United States of America where English language is the means of scientific discourse.

The  film 'To The Lighthouse', directed by Clin Greg, written by Hugh Stoddart 

To the Lighthouse is a 1927 novel by Virginia Woolf. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf has long been recognised as a seminal text in the modernist canon. Using her distinctive stream-of-consciousness technique, Woolf explores the inner lives of her characters and depicts a rapidly changing society. The novel explores themes of marriage, perception, memory and the passing of time.

Focussing on Virginia Woolf’s representation of time, consciousness and the rupture caused by World War One, Professor Kate Flint reveals how To the Lighthouse is a carefully structured, psychologically complex novel that ultimately asks the reader to reflect on their own ever-changing experience of being in the world.

Study of frame in the movie To the lighthouse

Frame analysis is a multi -disciplinary social science research method used to analyze how people understand situations.Framing can make an image more aesthetically pleasing and keep the viewer's focus on the framed object. It has direct attention back into the scene. It can add depth to an image, and can add interest to the picture when the frame is thematically related to the object being framed.

Whiteness/White Clothes 

white holds a lot of symbolic power in many western cultures as emblematic of goodness and purity. But the way white got that power is a pretty dark tale in history. Ironically, before white became symbolic of wealth and cleanliness, black was one of the most prevalent colors that evoked royalty and power. 

Mark Peplow writes that just as "the color white began to gain favor among European elites, explorers were beginning to encounter the indigenous people of Africa. The white/black dichotomy that evolved played right into racist ideologies  that Humphries notes were quickly embraced by Europeans eager to legitimize their racist beliefs."

As we know the dirt showed up most easily on white clothing, it represents the dual side of Mrs. Ramsay's nature. it soon became symbolic in European fashion but not because the wealthy didn’t get their clothes dirty. In fact, people believed that white clothes cleansed the body, drawing out dirt and filth while they were worn. That's why Mrs. Ramsay's try to pretend like she is pure and virtuous.

Doll

Basically, the doll indicates beauty and elegance and represents the characters. The impact of the Barbie doll on girls’ body images and the spread of a stereotypical model of womanhood has been the subject of extended reflections.

Doll is represents the daughter of the Mr. Ramsay and Mrs. Ramsay as well as Lily Briscoe. As Mrs. Ramsay always treats her daughter's like dolls. Even the doll is basically a symbolic frame for the female character. She believes that whatever she instructs her daughters to do they have to do. That means she is controlling her Daughters to become ideal women.

Snake 🐉

The experiencing deep changes in your life and are involved, consciously or not, in a grieving process as you are leaving the past or old ideas behind. It indicates high status in Hindu mythology and ideology. They take the form of a very large snake found in Hinduism and Buddhism.

Painting

We can see that Gender inequality acknowledges that men and women are not equal and that gender affects an individual's lived experience. These differences arise from distinctions in biology, psychology, and cultural norms. As male characters are against Lily Briscoe ss painter.

Philosophy in To the Lighthouse 

Virginia Woolf transposes the discourse of philosophy into the language . Although she left no essay on philosophy to guide us, To the Lighthouse draws attention to the possible relationship between philosophy and art.This chapter completes our reading of the modernist revolution by examining one of the most accomplished examples of modernist art.

Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927). All aspects of traditional narrative are sharply interrogated by Woolf, especially the matter of point-of-view and the daring handling of a character’s inner world by her masterful use of ‘stream-of- consciousness’. Again the relationship among the arts, in this case literature and the visual arts, is pursued a little further. In this novel too, philosophical issues, especially the increasingly troublesome problem of the relation of language to the real including the gendering of identity, are brought significantly into view as central themes of the work.

Mrs. Ramsay is an “ideal mother, who functions at the level of myth” both a living woman and a “perfect symbolic figure”. She is the embodiment of Goddess Demeter and represents beauty and love. Mrs. Ramsay and Lily have a mother-daughter relationship also it indicates neighbourhood. Even regards them as mother-daughter artists. The daughter artist Lily is busy with her painting all day long while the mother Mrs. Ramsay is also an artist since she successfully arranges her dinner party just like an artist. The condition of a woman with ideal status which represents the Indian woman.

The documentary Andy Goldsworthy’s Rivers and Tides is a vision of the natural world which describes all the wonders as great  creation always should be done by nature and natural elements. In that he uses the various nature components like driftwood, ice, mud, leaves, and stones, and modified with human hands. 

A spectacular visual gallery of Goldsworthy’s relationship with nature, this artist painstakingly makes ephemeral sculptures built out of bits of ice in the trees or loose rock, which may be overgrown by plants or swallowed by high tides. His work melts, disintegrates, drifts away due to exposure of the elements of which they are composed. Goldsworthy’s creations are intentionally mutable works, their temporary nature a part of the work. Filmmaker Thomas Reidelsheimer goes to great lengths to demonstrate Goldsworthy’s ideas about the forgotten relationships between light, color, movement, balance, and fluidity of form in nature, creating a surprising and enjoyable journey through art of the natural world.

What is Art?🎨🎭🖋

If we elaborate it into simple words then it can be the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

The leaf Horn 

The "horn" is often used metaphorically to signify strength and honor, They are also the power and dignity of the divinity, and horned gods usually represent warriors and lords of ANIMALS because horns are the chief weapons and ornaments of the animals which possess them; hence they are also used as a type of victory. Which connected with salvation and immortality as well, as the horn is extremely durable. It is utilizing the inner self for its own benefit. It is going to bring out the uniqueness in you for others to benefit and Never ignore the inner instinct that is playing mind games with you. Although stop being an introvert and be open to life.

The stone wall 

"A man without self control is like a city broken into and left without walls."

This particular wall is not one of brick and stone, but a spiritual wall , designed to keep spiritual problems out. Distraction of walls also symbolizes that lack of spirituality of human beings.

Satan hates walls. "Let's all be one happy family," he whispers in our ears. "Walls are for the immature. You're spiritually mature now, so you can handle immorality without a problem." Do not fall for this line. God Himself teaches us to be against Satan. He placed flaming swords at the entrance to the Garden of Eden to guard and even New Jerusalem will have towering walls and gates. In type, the church is to be a wall within which peace dwells and righteousness flourishes.

Stones indicate hardness and strength, therefore the walls of stones represent the power and control of politics, they are always talking about the security but on another hand they try to control over the people. 

Wooden Igloo 

He creates an igloo out of driftwood collected from the beach. When the tide comes in, the wooden structure begins to float and then drift to the sea in a slow swirl. But Goldsworthy is not attached to his art:

 "It feels as if it's been taken off into another plane, another world . . . It doesn't feel at all like destruction."

The artist also doesn't think in terms of success or failure. After he has spent many hours constructing an intricate mobile of twigs and thorns, the wind shifts and the piece collapses. Goldsworthy surveys the wreckage and practices equanimity. He seems to know that sometimes the magic works and sometimes it doesn't.

Thinking Activity on The Scarlet Letter

Hello Readers,

Hell is an existential state of self meaninglessness totally dependent on the temporary praise or insults of others we hold in higher or equal esteem than ourselves. This is a kind of absurdity. A great tragedy. The quote has been hailed as the slogan for introverts and a lovely way to explain any sort of discontent or dissatisfaction we encounter with family members, strangers on public transport and our time-stealing co-workers. It also fits snug with the American conception of the existentialist as a sad, lonesome, life-hating frequenter of run-down cafes.

In a simple sense if i say then, it could be taken to mean that the people around us frustrate us because they do not do what we want and sometimes seem to do the opposite. Psychologically, it could be said that we choose to be near people who “fit” the flaws in our personality and so are perfectly suited to make us miserable. But this does not quite get the sense that the play intends: it is not a play about psychopathology but about the human condition.

The “hell” that other people present us with is not because they do bad things to us, but simply because they see us. They witness who we are and so do not permit us to live with the illusions that we would like to believe about ourselves.

Hegel moves his analysis of consciousness in general to self-awareness. In the tradition of idealists, Hegel posits that awareness of objects necessarily implies a certain self-consciousness, i.e. separation between the subject and the perceived object. But Hegel goes further and says that the subjects are also objects to other subjects. Self-awareness is the awareness of another self-consciousness. In other words, one becomes aware of oneself through the eyes of another. This is the famous struggle for recognition. Otherness and pure self-consciousness are involved in a “fight to the death” for recognition.

The best real-life examples would come from your own life. When you can find them, you may have understood what the play is about.

As a philosopher, theologian, poet, playwright and essayist working in the early 20th century, T.S. Eliot saw and described the American and European landscape of both World War I and World War II. The writer of such unforgettable poems as

“The Four Quartets” 

Eliot was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948.

1.What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? or Has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mytho-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

The writing style of Eliot is conservative and regressive. Just not only in The wasteland but as above given lines which shows the continuity of conservative and reactionary beliefs. In The Wasteland  all the characters are reflected in the cultural politics and conservatism of Eliot.  It is a piece of aesthetic with modernism's reaction.

Warmly welcome to my blog. I have put it the basic narrative of the 20th century and literature. In which major events were happened and it is put into the consideration of the queen Victoria's region from the beginning of the  Queen Elizabeth.

Throughout the 20th Century, literature became less romanticized and took a turn toward serious topics. Specifically war, as WWI and WWII played huge roles in the forming of the century. Part of the mental climate of the early 1900's was a strong reaction against certain aspects of Victorianism.
